Tornado Preparedness and Storm Safety in Oklahoma

Posted on May 3, 2024

As spring unfolds and the risk of severe weather looms, it's crucial for every Oklahoman to prioritize storm safety and be prepared for the unexpected. We've put together a list of tornado preparedness strategies, essential safety tips, and how to assemble a storm safety kit so you and your loved ones can best be prepared this season.

Tornado Safety Tips:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep updated on forecasts and warnings. Have multiple ways to receive alerts, including weather radios, smartphone apps, and local news updates. Pay attention to storm watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
  1. Have a Plan: Develop a family emergency plan that includes designated shelter areas in your home and a designated meeting place in case family members are separated during a storm. Practice tornado drills regularly so everyone knows what to do when a tornado warning is issued.
  1. Identify Shelter Areas: Identify the safest areas in your home or workplace where you can seek shelter during a tornado. Basements, storm cellars, and interior rooms on the lowest level of the building offer the best protection. Avoid windows and exterior walls.

Storm Safety Kit:

In addition to having a plan and knowing what to do during a tornado, it's essential to have a well-stocked safety kit on hand. Here are some items to include in your kit:

  1. Emergency Supplies:
    • Bottled water (one gallon per person per day)
    • Non-perishable food items (canned goods, granola bars, etc.)
    • Manual can opener
    • First aid kit
    • Prescription medications
    • Flashlight with extra batteries
    • Whistle or signaling device
    • Dust masks or bandanas
  2. Personal Items:
    • Copies of important documents (identification, insurance policies, etc.)
    • Cash in small denominations
    • Portable cell phone charger
    • Personal hygiene items (toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary supplies, etc.)
    • Extra clothing and sturdy shoes
  3. Safety Equipment:
    • Multipurpose tool or pocketknife
    • Duct tape and plastic sheeting to seal windows and doors
    • Fire extinguisher
    • Matches or lighter in a waterproof container
    • Blankets or sleeping bags

As Oklahomans, we understand the importance of being prepared for severe weather, especially tornadoes. By staying informed, having a plan, and assembling a safety kit, you can protect yourself and your loved ones during these potentially life-threatening events.
