As a homeowner, how do you know whether your home is energy efficient or not? You could guess based on your own understanding of energy efficiency, but it’s much more effective to evaluate the energy efficiency of a home using the Home Energy Rating System (HERS®). To earn a HERS index score, a home must comply with many mandatory standards, including components like window sealing, wall sealants, and insulation. Let’s take a closer look at the HERS® Index, and why it’s so important.

What is the HERS® Index Score?

Based on a scale of 0 to 150, the HERS® Index measures a home’s energy efficiency, with 0 being a net-zero energy home that generates as much energy as it consumes. On the other end of the scale, 150 indicates a home built to the minimum standards specified by the 2006 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). A professional energy auditor determines the HERS® Index Score of a house after physically inspecting the house and conducting a detailed analysis of its energy consumption. Newly constructed homes are expected to score 100 on the HERS® Index, so any score lower than that indicates higher energy efficiency than a standard new home. A home that scores 70 would be 30 % more energy efficient than a standard new home, while a home with a score of 130 would be 30% less energy efficient.

What Goes Into the Scoring?

A home’s HERS® Score is calculated by a certified inspector from the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET). Conducting an energy audit on your home, the inspector compares the data against a ‘reference home’, a designed model home. This model home will be the same size and shape as your home, to keep the score relative to the size, shape, and type of house in which you live. The Energy Rating includes variables like the exterior walls, the floors over unconditioned spaces, ceilings and roofs, attics, foundations and crawlspaces, windows, doors, vents, and ductwork, and HVAC systems, water heating systems and the thermostat.

Why is Your Home’s HERS® Index Score Important?

Determining your home’s score can give you a lot of information about your house. You can learn how efficiently it’s operating, and how you can save money on energy costs by making minor modifications. If you’re planning to sell your home, working towards a better HERS® Index Score can increase its value, and if you’re buying a home, looking at the HERS® Score can help you determine where you might want to make some changes to increase its efficiency.

It is that time of the year!  Relay for Life-Moore is right around the corner on May 29th.  Landmark Fine Homes has always been committed to raising money for the American Cancer Society.  This year we are changing it up a little.

In the years past we have donated $1.00 for every NEW like to our Facebook Page.  This year we are starting off with donating $1000 once we receive 1000 likes.  We only needed less than 100 NEW likes to reach that goal.  As of this morning, we are at 1004 LIKES!!!  Our next goal will be smaller..... If we get to 1500 likes we will donate $2000.

Several of our Team Members as well as extended family have been diagnosed with cancer.  This is very near and dear to all of our hearts.00

As you can tell it is a lot of fun!!  We would love to have our Landmark Family join us this year.  Keep watching for updates!

The reality is all year is Tornado Season in Oklahoma but we begin to talk about them more in March.  As you are thinking about making your plans for this year keep a few things in mind.

If you live in a older home it is not cost effective to make the changes necessary to make your home safer. Stop by one of our Model Homes in Carrington Lakes, The Preserve at Parkside, The Springs at Greenleaf Trails, The Reserve at Valencia or Belleau Wood and ask our New Home Consultants to see "The Five Secrets You Must Know Before You Buy a New Home." The Five Secrets will show you  what sets Landmark Fine Homes apart in our construction and safety features in our homes.

When you are thinking about building a new home be sure and talk with our New Home Consultants about the options for Storm Shelters. Our customers have chosen every one of these options and have very specific reasons why they have made those choices.  Here are some of the reasons they have told us:

In the garage Lift Top Shelter:

Our Customers love the convenience of being able to walk in the garage and not be in the elements of the storm.  The lift door makes the shelter feel more roomy. Some of our customers did not choose this option because to get in the shelter would require their cars to be in the driveway and risk having hail or other damage.

In the garage Sliding Door Shelter:

This is also a great options for those wanting to stay out of the elements of the storm.  The sliding door was chosen by some because of the ease of opening and shutting the door. The same reasons for not choosing this option as with the in the garage Lift Top Shelter.

Metal Safe Room:

Several of our customer have picked the Metal Safe room to be put in their garage.  This is a great option for those that do not want to go underground.  It is also a great option for those who would have trouble going up and down stairs or those with physical disabilities.  Some have not chosen this because they feel safer underground.

Outdoor Concrete Safe Room:

There have been several customers who do not want to give up any garage space for the Storm Shelter and have opted for the Outdoor Concrete Safe Room.  The reasons for choosing this have been the same as the Metal Safe Room.

Outdoor Underground Storm Shelter:

Several Customers have chosen this based on the fact that they do not want it in the garage because they want to be able to leave the cars protected during a storm but want to be underground.  Things to consider with this option is you might have to be in the elements to get into the shelter during a storm.

If we haven't started we can also put the above-ground shelters inside the home if you know where you would like it. Which kind would you choose?

It was a pleasure working with Suzzanne Wolfe in the purchase our Landmark home.  From the moment we walked into the model home in March 2014, she was cordial, friendly and extremely helpful explaining to us what made Landmark homes different and more importantly, better than other homes we had seen to that point.  She was always responsive to our questions, concerns and went the extra mile to accommodate our needs for finding a great home for our move to OKC.

We moved to Oklahoma in June.  When we discovered that the temporary rental home we were to move into that day was unacceptable, Suzzanne went above and beyond to help us find another suitable rental home until the Landmark home we purchased was ready for us to move in.  She ensured the travel time from the rental home to Tinker AFB where Tony works was consistent with travel time we would have in the Edmond home...it is that attention to detail that we love about Suzzanne (it is most uncommon, but very much appreciated!)  She provided support in our hour of need and we will never forget that support...EVER!

Evan Thomas was superb going through our final walkthrough ensuring any issues identified were properly annotated and marked and most importantly worked so that when we moved in all issues had be fixed.  Means a lot to us as customers that he made sure our home was inspection ready for move in.  He also went the extra mile in our functional review of the home making sure he answered all of our questions on the operation of the systems that are in the house.  He did the little things like turning on the oven to burn off the factory newness so that when we used it the first time we did not stink up the house!  He did not have to do that, but he did it because he is Evan and that is how he operates!  We look forward to our subsequent walkthroughs, because we know he cares deeply about what he does and we know he'll take care of any issues we may discover since our move in.

We closed on our new house in December and we are very happy.  We love the quality of our Landmark home.  That is what drew our interest from the beginning.

Sincerely,

Tony and Jennifer
