Tips for Choosing the Perfect Color Palette for Your Home
How do you choose a color palette when decorating your home? It is not quite as simple as picking your favorite color. Several considerations should go into picking a color scheme, including the mood you want to create and your existing home décor.
Deciding on a Color Palette for Home Decorating
If you are starting from scratch, you can choose a color at random and begin to build your color palette. Most people already have existing décor pieces, however, and the décor that is already in your home should play a part in informing your color choices.
- One good way to pick a color is to choose one that is featured in the largest piece in your room. It could be your sofa, a rug, or a large piece of artwork, but choosing a color from that pattern is a good way to begin your palette. If you want a neutral palette, choose a white or beige tone from the item.
- After you have chosen the main color for your room, you can begin adding additional colors to fill out your palette. A good rule of thumb is to choose only three colors, and work with the 60-30-10 rule. This means the dominant color makes up 60 percent of the color scheme, the secondary color is 30 percent, and the remaining 10 percent is an accent color. Limiting yourself to only three colors is fairly fool proof, and can help you create a cohesive space.
- Look to the color wheel to determine which colors to use together. Colors next to each other, called analogous colors, create a peaceful, restful vibe. On the other hand, if you want to energize a space, you might choose complementary colors, which are opposite each other on the color wheel.
- If you are still having trouble envisioning the color you want for your home, consider your wardrobe. The colors you enjoy wearing may be the perfect colors for your space. What’s more, doing this means you will always look good in your space!
Tying Together Your Home Decor
When you are designing your home interior, it is usually best to decorate the more formal rooms first, then move on to the casual spaces. Once you have chosen a palette for the living room, dining room, and entry, pull one color from that palette and use it as an accent in your other rooms. Another interesting strategy for using color in your home is to decorate from dark to light as you go up. In other words, darker floors, medium colored walls, and light colored ceilings. The reason this works so well is that it replicates the natural world, making your interior feel comfortable and familiar.
Creating an Interior Design that is Uniquely Yours
Each year, designers announce trends and paint companies choose the “color of the year.” What really matters in the end, however, is which colors speak to you. If you confidently choose the colors in your house to reflect your personality and personal style, and you follow a few simple rules for coordinating colors, your house will be a beautiful place to call home.
